1. James P. Prentice was b. Oct 1847, England, as were his parents. He emigrated to the United States in 1851 at the age of about 4 years, probably with his parents. Not in 1860 census. He appears in the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 (spelled Prentiss) census in Wilmington, New Castle Co. Delaware, as a Butcher with his wife and family. Not in 1920 census and perhaps deceased.

He m. Eliza/Liza/Lydia M. Simmons on 25 Nov 1890, Wilmington. She was b. Jul 1850, DE, with her father b. in DE and mother in PA. Children:

  1. Mary Ethel Prentice, b. c. 1869, DE. 1880 at home in Wilmington, DE. Not home in 1900. She m. William P. Hastings, 1890. He was b. c. 1865, Wilmington, DE. He was a Merchant. He was the son of Washington Hasstings (b. Wilmington,DE) and Catharine McCaulley (b. Wilmington, DE).

  2. Marjorie N. Prentice, b. c. 1872, DE. 1880 at home in Wilmington, DE. She m. William Wheatley, b. Mar 1872, DE. In 1900 they are living with her parents. Daughter:
    1. Mary Wheatley, b. Mar 1897, DE. 1900 at home in Wilmington.

  3. George P. Prentice, b. c. 1876, DE. 1880 and 1900 at home in Wilmington, DE. Not in 1910 or 1920 census. He is likely the George Pepper Prentiss shown in Professional Baseball Players as b. 1876, DE, and d. 8 Sep 1902 in DE. He is described as 5'11", 175 lbs., right handed, played his first game on 23 Sep 1901 and his final game on 29 Jul 1902, about 6 weeks before his death on 8 Sep 1902. No cause of death is shown.

  4. James W. Prentice, b. c. 1879, DE. 1880 at home in Wilmington, DE. Not home in 1900. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.

  5. J. Purcell Prentice, b. Jun 1888, DE. 1900 and 1910 at home in Wilmington, DE. 1920 census in Wilmington, DE, with his wife, Elizabetth M., b. c. 1892, DE; no children shown. He appears in the 1930 census in Brandywine, New Castle Co., DE, indexed as "J. Russell Prentiss," although the microfilm reads "J Purcell Prentiss." No children shown.

Living with the family in 1910, Wilmington, DE, were Marjorie Simmons, widow, b. c. 1827, PA, and a niece, Millie Simmons, b. c. 1892, DE.

Who are James P. Prentice's Parents?

James emigrated to America in 1851, but does not appear in the 1860 census.

We know he was b. in England, but "James Prentice" is such a common name we cannot tell whether he appears in the 1851 England census.
