Edward E. Prentiss of Cheshire Co., NH

Edward E. Prentiss of Cheshire Co., NH
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2009 and Revised 1 Jan 2009

Update of 1 Jan 2009: Edward, E. Myron and Ethan M. Prentice are descendants of Asa Myron Prentice who is #94.2 in our Henry eBook. That eBook now replaces this article.

1. (Unknown) Prentice married and had at least the following children:

  1. Edward Prentice, b. Dec 1869, NH. . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. E. Myron Prentice, b. Oct 1871, MA. . . . . . . . [3]
  3. Ethan M. Prentice, b. c. 1872, MA. . . . . . . . . .[4]

2. Edward Prentice was b. Dec 1869, NH. He appears in the 1880 with his brother, Ethan (but not E. Myron) living with a grandfather, Albert M. Doolittle. Doolittle was likely the father of their mother who married a Prentiss. Edward later appears in the 1900 and 1920 Cheshire Co., NH census with his wife and family.

He m. Eva A. who was b. Feb 1872, NH. Children of Edward and Eva:

  1. Elsie M. Prentiss, b. Oct 1894, NH
  2. Paul E. Prentiss, b. Jan 1897, NH
  3. Oliver M. Prentiss, b. Jun 1898, NH. Single in Keene, NH 1920 census.
  4. Margaret E. Prentiss, b. c. 1906, NH
  5. Lawrence A. Prentiss, b. c. 1911, NH

3. E. Myron Prentiss, b. Oct 1871, MA. He was living with the family of his brother, Edward, in the 1900 census.

He m. Ada M., b. c. 1883, NH. They appear in the 1920 Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH census.

4. Ethan M. Prentice, b. c. 1872, MA. He appears in the 1880 census, but not in the 1900 census, with his brother, Edward(but not E. Myron) living with a grandfather, Albert M. Doolittle. Doolittle was likely the father of their mother who married a Prentiss.

Who are the parents of Edward, Ethen and E. Myron Prentiss?

The only clue we have so far is that the 1900 census shows that the parents of Edward and E. Myron were born in NH. Both parents apparently were living in NH in 1869, moved to MA by 1871 when E. Myron was born, and were still there in 1872 when Ethan was born.

It is unclear whether their parents returned to NH, or whether they were deceased by 1880 when Edward and Ethan were living with their grandfather, Albert M. Doolittle. However, if their parents were living in NH in 1880, they apparently were not living in NH since none of the married couples shown have both born in NH.

If the parents were married by 1860, and considering ages and known families, the NH census shows only the following couples with both born in NH:

  • Snow Prentis (b. c. 1826) and his wife, Laura (b. c. 1827). They lived in Cheshire County.
  • John Willard Prentiss (b. 1811 and his wife, Emeline (birth date unknown). They lived in Walpole, Cheshire County.
