Who are Edmond Prentice's Parents?

Edmond Prentice does not appear in the 1920 or 1930 census in Smith Co., TX, and elsewhere in TX, and we have not been able to find him in any other databases to which we have access.

There seems to be a reasonable possibility that Edmond Prentice and his family are Negros. A search of the 1930 census for Smith Co., TX, where Edmond's son, Sirlister, was born, shows a number of Negro Prentices, but no white Prentices:

  • Charley Prentice, b. c. 1870, TX, and his wife, Mary, and family.
  • Charley Prentis, b c. 1891, TX, and his wife, Jessie, and family.
  • John Prentice, b. c. 1880, TX, and hs wife, Cordita.
  • Salina and Charlies Prentice, b. c 1900, Boardersin the home of John Alexander, Negro, b. c. 1855, AL.
  • Elnora Prntis, b. c. 1888, TX, a servant in the home of Alex Woldert.
  • Emma Prentis, b. c. 1858, TX, and her son, Wilbert, living in the home of Larkin Loflvin, Negro, b. cl 1890, TX.
  • West Prentice, b. c. 1853, TX, and his wife, Emer, and family, including a son, Sambo.

Earlier census years also show Negro families in Smith Co., TX.

Given the number of Negro families in Smith Co., TX, census records, and the absence of any non-Negro Prentice families in those records, there seems to be a reasonable possibility that Edmond Prentice and his family, had they appeared in 1930 census records, would have been classified in census records as Negros.
