INTRODUCTION: We found a family tree purporting to start with Benjamin Prentis of St. George Hanover Square, Middlesex, England at Ancestry.com . We sent an email on 27 Se 2010 to the creator of that website, ChrisTurner 543 at Ancestry.com asking for the basis for his identification of Benjamin as the proginator of the tree set out below. So far we have received his reply. Pending receipt of his reply, we have identified George Prentice and Henry Prentice, both of Sible Hedingham, as Benjamin's sons.

1. Benjamin Prentis was likely b. c. 1780-1795 at an unknown location, probably in England. He is identified as a Butcher on 23 Feb 1840 in St. Georhge Hanover Square, Middlesex, England on on Chris Turner's web page at Ancestry.com . His web page does not identify the source of that information; further, Benjamin Prentis does not appear in the 1841 census .

His wife's name is presently (Unknown). Benjamin might be the father of:

2. (perhaps) George Prentice, b. c. 1816. A George Prentice, age 25, unmarried, appears in the 1841 census in St. George Hanover Square in the home of Francis Gill, (occupation Plumber), but relationships are not stated in the 1841 census.

For reasons presently unknown, Chris Turner indicates that he is the same person as George Prentis who appears in the 1851 census in Westminster St. Margaret, Middlesex, as b. c. 1816, Sible Hedingham, Essex, England, and d. Mar 1877 in Holborn, Middlesex. For now, we will set aside the issue of George Prentis' parents and continue with George's wife and family.

George and his family appear in the 1861 census in Westminster St. Paul Covent Garden, Middlesex.

Henry does not appear in the 1881 or 1891 census and was likely by then deceased.

4. Alfred Prentis, b. c. 1848 in Chelmsford, Essex, England, appears in the the 1881 London census as a Compositor with his wife and family.

He m. Emily, b. c. 1851, London. In 1881 they were then living at 64 Forston St., London. Alfred does not appear in the 1851, 1861 or 1871 Essex census. Alfred later appears in the 1891 census as a "Printer's Compositor" in District 34, Haggerston, Shoreditch, London. Also in the 1891 Shoreditch census. Who are Henry Prentis' Parents?

A search of census records in England from 1841 forward does not disclose any other Prentis or Prentice born in Sible Hedingham other than the 1851 Sible Hengham census which shows a Matilda Prentice, b. c. 1842, visiting Ann Prentice, b. c. 1800 in Glemsford, Suffolk. Ann was a Housekeep in the home of David Rush of Sible Hedingham.

One could hypothesize that Ann Prentice was the mother of Matilda Prentice and that perhaps was the mother of, or sister to Henry Prentis.
