By emails of 30 Jan 2003 and 1 May 2003, Kerry Prentice has provided us with information about the family of Ann Prentice which appears in the Parish Register of St. Peters London Docks and in the 1881 census. We have augmented Kerry's information with information from census records.

1. Robert Prentice was b. c. 1829 in Scotland. He first appears with his wife and family in the 1861 census in St. George in the East, Middlesex, England. He may have d. after the 1863 birth of his daughter, Margaret, and does not appear with his family in the 1871 and later census.

He m. Ann Murray, b. c. 1831, St. George in the East, Middlesex. Her father, James Murray, b. c. 1785, Scotland (incorrectly indexed as b. c. 1836) was living with them in the 1861 census.

  • She appears in the 1871 census in Hackney St. John, London with daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret.
  • She appears in the 1881 London census living at 4 Bird St., London, with her children.
  • She later appears in the 1891 and 1901 St. George in the East Civil Parish, London, census as a widow (indexed in 1891 as "Amo Prentice").

Children of Robert and Ann per census records:

The 1891 census shows the following additional person in Ann's household

2. Margaret Ellen Prentice, b. c. 1863, a single woman of 4 Bird Street, St. Peters London Docks had the following children who appear in the Parish Register: Margaret, called Margaret Wingate, and her son, Robert D. Prentice, are living with Margaret's mother, Ann, in the 1891 London census.
