Introduction: James Prentice was formerly #2 in our Winter 2004 article about James Prentice of Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland . It now appears he is not connected to that line so we have set up this new article about him.
1. James Prentice may have been b. c. 1775-1785.
He m. Isobel Elder. That marriage is not in our database and is not shown in Glasgow marriage records. See also the discussion about James Prentice at the bottom of this article. James and Isobel had 1 or more children, including (per IGI):
- John Prentice, b. 28 May 1805 Carnwath. Not in 1851 census.
- Jean Prentice, b. 10 Apr 1807 Carnwarth

2. James Prentice, b. 8 Oct 1809, Carnwath. Not in 1841 or 1851 census.
He m. Agnes Marshall on 22 Sep 1838, Cambuslang, Lanark, Scotland (per IGI and Del Christie, email, 17 Nov 2004, citing the marriage certificate of John Prentice and Margaret Rowand (below) which identifies his parents as James Prentice and Agnes Marshall).

3. John Prentice probably b. c. 1838-39, Cambuslang, Lanarkshire. He m. c. 1836-7 at the age of 18. He appears in the 1881 Kilbarchan census as b. c. 1839, Neewton, Lanarkshire. He appear in the 1891 census in Linwood, Kilbarchan Civil Parish with his wife and family.
He m. Margaret Rowand on 12 Sep 1857, Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland.
However, Margaret Rowand may have been a 1st wife. Carol Austins' email of 14 May 2008 has a copy of the marriage record of the 1878 John, #4ix below, and it shows John's mother as "Margaret Watson, deceased".
A possible explanation may be that #4 John was married twice: the first time to Margaret Rowand and the 2nd time to Margaret Watson. That would make Margaret Rowand a stepmother to the 1878 John and that would explain why Margaret Rowand's name did not appear on John's marriage record as his mother. Extending that thought further, since "Rowand" appears as a middle name in some of the children of the 1838-9 John #4, it would mean that at least the first 7 children were those of John and Margaret Rowand, the mother of #viii (Elizabeth) is unclear, and that Margaret Watson is the mother of numbers ix (John), x (Ann) and xi (Jane).

He m. Marion Mitchell Pattison on 14 Nov 1882. She was b. 1863. They had 1 or more children, including:

5. John Prentice, b. c. 1878, Kilbarchan. At home in 1881 and 1891. At the time of his 1904 marriage according to the record of his marriage. He was then living in New Stevenston, about 10 miles ESE of central Glasgow. 1801 census in Kilbarchan.
He m. Jean Scobie 26 Feb 1904, Glasgow and who, at that time, was living in Holytown, just NE of, and abutting New Stevenston.
John and Jean do not appear as a married couple in the 1901 Scotland census. They had 1 or more children, including:

6. Alexander Prentice, b. 1895. He m. Isabella Watson on 31 Dec 1916. She was b. 1899. Children:

- Robert Prentice, b. 1 Aug 1918, Paisley, Scotland, and d. 1992, Kent, England. He m. Marjorie Pointing.

7. John Alexander Hannah Prentice was b. 30 Sep 1911, perhaps in, or near, Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland, but that is unclear. He d. at 19 Galston St., Glasgow, on 22 Jul 1971 at the age of 59 years and almost 9 months. John served with the 8th Army in Africa in WW II.
He m.1st Mary O'Donnell in the 1930s, perhaps in St. Aloyius Catholic Church. Mary may have been b. in Lanark, or possibly Springburn where her mother, Roseann (McElhinney) O'Donnell. wife of James O'Donnell, was living in the 1901 census. John and Mary had 1 or more children, including:
- Rose Ann Prentice, b. 15 Sep 1937 in Possil Park. She is Carol Austin's mother.

8. Matilda Kane Prentice, b. 23rd april 1929. She m. Derek Thomas Christie. He was b. 14 Jul 1929. Children:

In his emails, Del Christie mentions James Prentice and Isobel Elder. So far we do not have confirmed birth information for Isobell Elder. She might be the Isabell Elder, b. 25 Mar 1775 in Carnwath, Lanark, dau. of John Elder and Jean Clerkson. On the other hand, the IGI says that the "Isabel Elder" who m. James Prentice was b. c. 1783 and was "of Carnwath." The IGI also says that James Prentice was b. c. 1179 and was "of Carnwath."
A related issue is the identity of the parents of James Prentice who m. Isobel Elder. Del Christie has suggested the possibility that his parents may be John Prentice and Euphemia Scott of Carluke, Lanark. They did have a son, James Prentice, b. 27 Sep 1768, Carluke and chr. there 1 Oct 1768. However, in our article about John Prentice of Carluke we show James (#6) as marrying Elizabeth Eadie on 1 Aug 1789 at Carluke.
