We are helping Mark Prentice in tracing the ancestry of his John Robert Prentice. Here is what we have so far:
1. Thomas Prentice may have been b. c. 1830-1845. He was a Produce Merchant and in the 1901 census is identified as a Sugar Merchant who was boarding in the Imperial Hotel St Andrews. His ancestry can be found at John Prentice of Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland .
He m. Jessie McAlpine. They had 1 or more children, including:
- John Robert Prentice, b. c. 1865 and d. 15 Apr 1924. . . . . . . [2]
2. John Robert Prentice was b. c. 1865 and d. 15 Apr 1924, age 59. He may, or may not, be the same person as the John Robert Prentice who is Mark's Great Grandfather. There is a vague family story about John "running a plantation or something abroad". He was a Commercial Clerk and was deceased by 1927
The name of his wife is not presently known. John Robert Prentice, Mark's Great Grandfather, had 1 or more children, including:
- Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1902-3. . . . . . . [3]
- (perhaps) John Prentice.
3. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1902 or 3, probably Scotland, as he is listed as being 24 at the time of his marriage in 1927. He m. Norah Millicent Eggleton on 21 Jul 1927. She was b. 1899 in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England. Unfortunately, their marriage record only lists John Robert as being the father and being dead by 1927 and his profession as a commercial clerk. No mention is made of his mother. Alexander left his family while his children were still young. They had 3 or more children, including:
- Peter Prentice, b. bef. 1927.
- Alexander Prentice (nee Eggleton), b. 26 Apr 1927. He m. Miss. Coleclough and had 1 or more children, including:
- Mark Prentice, b. 16 Dec 1970, Chester.
- April Prentice, b. aft. 1927.
It seems quite likely that John Robert Prentice is the son of Thomas Prentice and Jessie McAlpine who are #4 in our article about John Prentice of Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Somewhat less likely since the sequencing of first and middle names is different, John Robert Prentice might be the son of Alexander Prentice and Rosa Riera-Osambelea. who are #5 in our article about John Prentice of Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
