Elizabeth Prentiss of Canada and NY

We are working with Connie Gilbert, Pamela Graf and Jeannine (McEvoy) Rowe in tracing their Prentiss roots. Here is what we have so far:

A. Lewis Prentiss. We do not yet have a birth date for him, but it could have been anywhere between 1770 and 1800. As for his place of birth, the Death Certificate of his daughter, Elizabeth, lists her father as Lewis Prentiss of Ireland and her mother is Catherine McDonald of Scotland. The information for the death certificate was given by Mary Jane Magoon Blanchard, Elizabeth's married daughter..

Connie Gilbert suggests that the reference is to Lewis Prentice and Catharine McDonell who are #4 in our Spring 2001 article entitled Daniel Prentice of Tryon Co., NY, and Charlottenburgh, Ontario, Canada . There are, however, some problems with that:

• The spelling of Lewis' surname in our Daniel Prentice article is "Prentice," not "Prentiss."
• Lewis was born in Canada, not Ireland, and his father, Daniel, was born in New York.
• The spelling of Catherine's surname is "McDonell," not "McDonald."

While surname spelling differences might be minor differences, the reference to Elizabeth's father, Lewis Prentiss, as born in Ireland appears to preclude him from being Daniel's son. She indicated the "Ireland" reference was provided by Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Jane (Magoon) Blanchard. She certainly would have known from Elizabeth, and probably from Lewis himself, where Lewis was born. If he was born in Canada, why would she have said Ireland? If she said Ireland, she knew he was born in Ireland. Further investigation is needed to identify Lewis Prentiss' parents.

Lewis and Catherine had 1 or more children, including:

1. Elizabeth Prentiss. We have 2 records pertaining to Elizabeth's birth:

• The1861 Canada census for Glengarry says she was b. c. 1824 in "Upper Canada" which at that time encompassed the southern portion of Ontario, including the Charlottenburgh area.
• The 1850 census in Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY, says she was b c. 1825 in Canada

Her death and funeral were sometime between October 7 and October 19, 1910 according to her Obituary found in The Journal and Republican, Lowville, NY, October 20, 1910. She and 3 sons went to Wyoming about 1892 or 93. Elizabeth filed a land patent in Niobrara County WY on 3 Aug 1899 (per certified copy of the patent).

Connie Gilbert recently found a reference to one of her sons, James H. Magoon, in Progressive Men of the State of Wyoming, published in Chicago by A. W. Bowen and Co. in 1903. His parents are listed as Williard and Elizabeth (Prentiss) Magoon. His birthdate and place of birth are correct in the entry. The reference is a Biography Database that is found at the University of Wyoming Library [2].

Elizabeth m. Willard Magoon. He was b. c. 1828 and in 1850 was a Clothier in Stockholm, St. Lawrence Co., NY. Ancestor charts for him can be found at Ancestry.com. Children (per Pamela Graf, except as to Joseph H. Magoon):

2. Catharine Magoon. She was born 1851 in Canada. She died 1903 in Town of Diana, Lewis County, N Y. She m. John LaDuke. He was born 1833 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He died Abt. 01 Apr 1920 in Oneonta, NY. Children:
   1. Amelia V. LaDuke. She was born 1876. She m. James J. Lynch. He was b. 1858 and d. before 1930, probably in Oneonta,Otsego Co., NY. Children:
      1. Mary C. Lynch. She was born 1905.

   1. Dessie Blanchard, dau., b. 23 Mar 1872, and d. 1902. She married Lynn Gage on 15 Sep 1896.
   2. Wesley Gail Blanchard, b. 14 May 1874 (Source: 1880 Federal Census, Town of Diana, Lewis County and family information) and d. 5 May 1937. He m. Nellie Swan on 15 Jun 1915.
   3. William Thomas Blanchard, son, b. 1877 and d. 27 Mar 1931 in Lowville, NY or St. Lawrence River, Massena Co., NY (source: The Journal and Republican, Lowville, NY, April 30, 1931 and Federal census record 1880, Lewis County, town of Diana.

4. Belle Magoon. Connie Gilbert suggests she is probably Catharine Magoon, b. c. 1851 and d. 1903. She m. John LaDuke, b. abt 1833 and d. 1920 (Source: cemetery records Harrisville, Lewis County, NY and recollection of Merril Caldwell Brown, granddaughter of Sarah Elizabeth Magoon). However, a posting on Ancestry.com says she m. Frank Jones, but with no further information.

5. Sarah Elizabeth Magoon b: 6 Apr 1860, Lancaster, Ontario Canada and d. 27 Feb 1936 [6] in Diana, Lewis Co., NY. She m. George Frederick Caldwell on 1 Jan 1878 in Evans Mills, NY. He was b. 2 Feb 1860 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, and d.Feb 1947 in Copenhagen, Jefferson Co., NY. He was the son of Alanson Church Caldwell and Polly Coon. In 1927 lived in Harrisville, NY (per obit. of sister, Julia). Children:
   1. Frank Eugene Caldwell b: 16 Mar 1881 in Diana, Lewis Co., NY, and d. 26 Aug 1952 in Community Hospital, West Carthage, NY.. He m. Wilda Mae Mantle on 4 Jul 1900. She was b. 2 Jan 1772 and d. 28 Aug 1968 (per Obituary and family records, Watertown Daily Times). These are Connie Gilbert's grandparents. Children per Connie Gilbert, email, 5 Aug 2009:

7. James H. Magoon, b. c. 1859, Canada. In 1927 lived in CA (per Connie Gilbert email of 25 Feb 2005) [7]. He appears in the 1930 census in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles Co., CA with his wife, Alice, b. c. 1892. No children are shown, but any children would have left home by that date since he was 70 and she was 58. He does not appear in the 1880, 1900, 1910 or 1920 US census, nor in the 1881 Canada census.

8. William L. Magoon, b. 4 Apr. 1863, Ontario Canada and died 23 Feb 1934 in Lusk, WY. He married Elvina Lipke in 1902 (source: Historical encyclopedia of Wyoming, edited by Thomas S. chamblin, Cheyenne, WY: Wyoming Historical Institute, 1954 2 vols, Vol 2, page 1029; 1920 Federal Census for Niobrara County, WY). William is also mentioned in Julia Magoon Cole's obituary. She was b. 1878, WI, and d. 2 Feb 1959, Lusk, WY. Children:
