Thomas Prentice of Butch Green, Essex, England

Thomas Prentice of Butch Green, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised 24 Jul 2006

Update of 24 Jul 2006: Thomas Prentice is almost certainly the same person as Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1841, Sandon, who appears in our Fall 2002 article about John Prentice of Sandon, Essex, England . This article is now replaced by that other article.

1. Thomas Prentice was b. c. 1841 in "Butch Green, Essex" according to the 1901 census. "Butch Green" appears to be a transcription error and perhaps ought to be "Butts Green" which lies less than 3 miles SE of Sandon. A MultiMap.com map search does not find any "Butch Green" in England

Thomas is probably the same person as Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1840, Essex, and is the only Thomas Prentice appearing in the 1841 census in the 1839-1843 period living in Essex; the other 2 men named "Thomas" in the 1839-1843 period lived in Suffolk and Yorkshire. Until proven otherwise, for now, we proceed on the assumption that we have correctly identified Thomas.

Thomas appears in the 1901 Christchurch, Bournemouth, Hampshire, census as a Game Keeper with the family of Ellen Prentice, b. c. 1867, Lockings, Berkshire. He is called a "Game Keeper" and "Father in Law." Ellen may be the wife of one of his sons. That son may be Frederick Prentice, b. c. 1869, Roxwell, Essex; he is not in the 1901 census. Children per 1901 census:

  1. Florence Prentice, b. c. 1897, London, St. James.
  2. Dorothy Prentice, b. c. 1897, London, St. James.
  3. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1899, Bournemouth, Hants.
  4. Ruth Prentice, b. c. 1900, Bournemouth, Hants.
