Solomon Prentice of Easton, MA and NC
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised 29 Nov 2009

Update of 29 Nov 2009: Solomon Prentice is #37 in our Henry Prentice eBook. That eBook material now replaces this article.
Update of 3 Apr 2003:   This originally appeared in 1998 in our "Prentices of the South" issue as Solomon Prentice of NC . To that original article we have added new information, set out below.

Solomon Prentice Jr. was born 15 Aug 1748, Easton, MA, son of Rev. Solomon Prentice and his wife, Sarah.

He married, 1st in 1770 Anna Holbrook of Bellingham, MA; from there he went to Hull, MA where his father was preaching, and where Solomon Jr. was constable; and in 1775 he returned with his parents to Grafton, MA and next Alstead NH where his wife d. in March, 1778.

Children by his first wife, according to Binney's 1883 book:

  1. Anna Prentice, b. in Hull, 11 Oct 1771; probably d. young; her birth is recorded on Grafton records.
  2. Solomon Prentice, b. in Grafton 19 Aug 1773. He m. Elizabeth Fay of Alstead, NH on 23 May 1797; she d. 8 May 1847. Resided in Skeneatales, Co., NY where he died.
  3. Sarah Prentice, b. 3 Jan 1775; m. John Crane in 1791, farmer of Glover, VT; they had eight children, most of whom lived in Sutton, MA.
  4. Asa Prentice, b. 19 Dec 1777; learned the hatter's trade in Providence, RI; went to Havana and d. there of yellow fever, 1804.
  5. Anna Prentice, b. 16 Feb 1783; m. Noah Starr Sep 1806; lived in Greenfield, OH, had 4 sons and 5 daughters. (Note: Binney's 1883 work said Anna Holbrook died in 1779, so Anna cannot be her daughter, or else her mother's death date is wrong.)

After his 1st wife died in 1778, Solomon closed up his affairs there and moved to Edenton, NC where he again married, but the name of his 2nd wife is Unknown. Solomon and died there in 1805.

We have no information as to the identity of Solomon's second wife, nor whether he had any additional children born in NC. However, since was only in his 30s when he moved to NC, it seems likely that he would have had additional children born in NC. Below are 2 Prentices who may be children of Solomon's 2nd marriage:

  1. By email of 3 Apr 2003, Jerry Woolard brings to our attention his Prentice line which he has traced back to Mary/Polly Prentice (shown right) who was b. c. 1796 in Pasquotank, NC approximately 16 years after Solomon moved to NC about 1778. Solomon would have been only 48 in 1796. Mary m. Samuel Martin Overman on 13 Feb 1817 in Pasquotank Co., NC. Witnesses were William Davis and Richard Muse. Children of Mary and Samuel, all born after 1817:
    1. William Martin Overman
    2. James Monroe Overman Sarah Overman
    3. Nathan Overman
    4. Samuel Martin Overman Jr.
    5. Martha Jane Overman
    6. Robert Overman

  2. In checking the Census Records, we find a John Prentice in the 1850 Adair Co., TN census who was born in NC c. 1800, approximately 22 years after Solomon moved to NC in about 1778. Solomon would have been only 52 in 1800. John married Dicy, b. c. 1840, KY. Children:
    1. William Prentice, b. c. 1828, KY
    2. John A. Prentice (probably), b. c. 1831, Adair Co., KY (1860 Adair Co. census)
    3. Anderson Prentice, b. c. 1831, KY
    4. Mildred Prentice, b. c. 1833, KY
    5. Berry Prentice, b. c. 1838, KY
    6. Joel Prentice, b. c. 1840, KY
    7. H. C. (or H. T.) Prentice, b. c. 1843, KY
    8. James Prentice, b. c. 1845, KY
    9. Julia A. Prentice, b. c. 1847, KY
