Louisa Prentiss of British Possessions and Melrose, Middlesex, MA

Louisa Prentiss of British Possessions and Melrose, Middlesex Co. , MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 14 Jul 2006

Update of 14 Jul 2006: Louisa is the wife of Thomas T. Prentice who is #182 in our Stephen-3 eBook. Thomas was b. 17 Jun 1845 in Troy, Oakland Co., MI (per Ancestry.com) and was the U. S. Consul at Martinique when it was destroyed by eruption of Pelee on 8 May 1902. Both Louisa and Thomas were killed in the eruption.

1. Louisa Prentiss was b. Mar 1851 in "British Possessions". That would seem to signify a colony other than England, Scotland or Ireland. She was apparently widowed or divorced by 1900 as she appears in the 1900 Milrose, Middlesex Co., MA census without a husband. Shown are her children:
  1. James E. Prentiss, b. Sep 1874, British Possessions. Not in 1920 or 1930 census.
  2. Thomas Prentiss, b. May 1876, British Possessions. Not in 1900 or 1930 census.
  3. May L. L. Prentiss, b. Apr 1880, British Possessions.
  4. Christine H. Prentiss, b. Dec 1887, British Possessions

Also living with the family was Alice M. Frye, sister, b. Jun 1861, British Possessions.

They do not appear in Ellis Island Records, so may have entered through another port of entry.
