Ellis Island Records

Ellis Island Records
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2003 and Revised 11 Oct 2003

From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies which transported them kept detailed record passenger lists, called "ship manifests." Most of those records not only record the specific city from which a person emigrated, they also record the specific intended location to which that person is traveling in the United States. For families, the names and ages of the parents and all children are shown.

LDS volunteers have transcribed those recordsd into a searchable database. Searching those records is free, but one must first register at the website on the simple form provided. You will find the website at Ellis Island Records

A word of caution: The spelling in the Ellis Island record may be different from the way you spell the name. The person writing the name in the original record, or the one transcribing the record for the searchable database may have erred. For example, one might find one's "Prentice" under: Prentise, Prentis, Prendis, Prendiss, Premtiss, Prendiss, etc.

If you find any information about Prentices and their descendants in your search of Ellis Island records, we would surely appreciate your telling us about it. Please send your information to us at the Prentice Newsletter. Be sure to give the full title and date of this article in the Subject line of the email.

Caution: If you don't use the above email link, your email to us may be deleted as spam by our email filter.
