Elkanah Prentice of Uxbridge, MA

Elkanah Prentice of Uxbridge, MA
Fall 2003 and Revised 9 Jul 2003

Working from information in our database and from additional information provided by Jeffrey Davis' email of 8 Jul 2003, we have compiled the following information about the family of Elkanah Prentice:

1. Elkanah Prentice (son of John and Mary Prentice, #15), b. c. 1761 at Uxbridge, MA and d. 1839, Guilford, VT. In 1782, Elkanah was living in Northbridge, Worcester Co., MA where he was a shoemaker (Ref: Soldiers & Sailors of The American Rev. Book:974.4 M23m V. 12. (See Footnote 1)

Elkanah m. Margaret "Peggy" Tamerlain on 25 Mar 1784 at Holliston, MA. Peggy was. b. 25 Dec 1758, Holliston, MA, dau. of Seth & Susannah (Thompson) Tamerlain. Elkanah also m. Annth Tubb.

By 1785, Elkanah and Peggy were living in Brattleboro, Windham Co., VT. On 20 Sep 785, they were "warned out" of Brattleboro; the Warent was delivered at the home of Timothy Iamblin. He may have been Peggy's father or brother with whom Elkanah and his wife seem to have been living.

"Warning Out" was a common custom in many states. The town fathers feared that newcomers might become town charges, so all newcomers were automatically warned out. The Vermpmt State Legislature passed the act in Oct 1801, although the procedure had been in place for many years before, and it was in effect for 38 years. If served such warnings within the first year of their being in the town, they were not able to gain *residency* - meaning all the rights that go with it, voting, holding office, etc.

Many people ignored the warning-out and became affluent and influential citizens in their respective towns. Welfare existed back in those days - it just took a different form. People were sheltered, fed, and clothed, but not without some complaining from those who worked so hard for what little they had and had to share. Sometimes, widows would be warned out of town if they did not have any family members to care for them.

  • 1800 census: Elkanah Prentice & Peggy can also be found living in Dumerston, Windham Co. on pg: 135-living near Seth Drake who may the husband of Chloe Prentice. Elkanah's family is shown as: 11010-20010 which means:
    	- 1 male under 10, b. 1790-1800 (Lyman, 1791)
    	- 1 male 10-16, b. 1784-1790 (Silas, 1790)
    	- 1 male 26-45, b. 1755-1784 (Elkanah, 1761)
    	- 1 male 45 and older, b. 1755 or earlier (who?)
    	- 2 females under 10, b. 1790-1800 (Molly, 1794, and Eleanor, 1796)
    	- 1 female 26-45, b. 1744-1784 (Peggy, 1758)
