Chester Prentiss of New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2004 and Revised 12 Jul 2006

Update of 12 Jul 2006: Chester Prentiss is a descendant of Henry Prentice.

1. Chester Prentiss was b. c. 1884 in MA. He appears in the 1920 and 1930 New Bedford, Bristol Co. MA census with his wife, Helen A. (Dean?), b. c. 1883, MA. He appears later in the 1921 New Bedford directory as a Glass Cutter. Children shown in census::
  1. Carlton R. Prentiss, b. c. 1911, MA.
  2. Chester F. Prentiss, b. c. 1912, MA.

Also living with them is Franklin P. Dean, called father in law, b. c. 1859, MA.

Who are Chester Prentiss' Parents?

The only clues we have so far is an 1899 New Bedford directory entry showing a Chester L. Prentiss, 11 Shawmut Ave., "postal tel. operator" . He appears in the 1900 New Bedford census, b. 1883, MA, as an unmarried 16 year old boarder in the home of Eleanor Smith.

Also shown at that same address is Frank L. Prentiss, "machinist." Frank may, or may not, be the Frank Prentiss shown in the 1870 Mansfield, Bristol Co., MA census as b. 9 Jun 1865, RI, son of Lewis M. Prentiss, b. c. 1833, MA, shoe maker and his wife, Emeline. Lewis appears in the 1890 Mansfield directory as a boot and shoe maker at the corner of Chilson and Samoset Avenues. Lewis also appears in the Civil War Pension Index. Either Chester L. Prentiss or Frank L. Prentiss may be his father and the other an older brother.
