Solon Prentice of OH an Detroit, MI

Solon Prentice of NY and Detroit, Wayne Co., MI
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2001 and Revised 25 Mar 2008

Update of 25 Mar 2008: Solon Prentice is a member of the Prentice family with Hogg roots.

1. Solon Prentice, also known as Salon Prentice. was b. c. 1828 in OH and d. 8 Aug 1882 (per Cleveland obituary). In 1891 his wife was listed in the Detroit directory as a widow living at 83 Pitcher.

Solon had moved to MI at some date prior to 1856 when his daughter, Mary, was born. Solon appears in the 1870 and 1880 Detroit, Wayne Co., MI census, as a hardware merchant, with his wife, Sarah Elizabeth Fiske who he m. 24 Nov 1853 in either Cazenovia, Madison Co., NY or in Cuyahoga Co., OH. She was b. c. 1827-30 in NY. They had at least 1 daughter:

  1. Mary E. Prentice, b. Jul 1856, MI. She was unmarried and living at home with her mother in the 1900 Detroit census.

Who are Solon Prentice's Parents?

We have one possible clue. We know that Solon, b. c. 1828, had moved to MI before 1860 and in 1970 was living in Detroit Ward 6. On the chance that his parents and siblings may also have moved to Detoit Ward 6 by 1860, we checked the 1860 Ward 6 census and found:

  1. Eben Prentis, b. c. 1792, CT. He was 36 in 1828 and might be Solon's father.
  2. John F. Prentis, b. c. 1831, CT. He is a son of Eban (per 1850 Detroit census)., but probably not Solon's brother since Solon was b. in OH 3 years earlier.
  3. George H. Prentis, b. c. 1834, MI. He is a son of Eban (per 1850 Detroit census).
  4. B. T. Prentis, b. c. 1837, MI. He is probably Brown Prentiss, b. c. 1838-9, MI, son of Eben (per 1850 census).

Other children of Eben shown in the 1850 census are:

  1. Rebecca Prentiss, b. c. 1843, CT.
  2. John Prentiss, b. c. 1835, CT.

One problem with Eben being Solon's father is that Solon's OH birth location seems inconsistent with the birth places of Eben's other children. Neither does the 1830 OH census shown Eben, and the births of Eben's children show he was still in CT in 1830 or 1831.
