Rachel Prentice, London, England

Rachel Prentice of London, England
Spring 2001 and Revised 24 Jan 2001

We are helping Carolyn J Nelson in her efforts to identify Rachel Prentice who was likely b. c. 1550-1575, perhaps in London.

Carolyn indicates that Rachel Prentice m. William Scruggs on 3 Aug 1579 at Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London, England. However, another IGI entry shows that a Rachel Prentice she m. William SCROGGS on 3 Aug 1592, Christ Church, Newgate, London, England. The 1592 marriage date is more consistent with the birth dates of her known children, as set out in the IGI:

  • William Scruggs, b. c. 1592 London.
  • Thomas Scruggs, b. c. 1595 London
  • Adam Scruggs, b.c. 1597 London
  • Margaret Scruggs, b. c. 1599 London
  • Rachel Scruggs, b. c. 1601 London

Who are Rachel Prentice's Parents?

The IGI does not give the name of her parents, but since she was married at Christ Church Greyfriers Newgate, a search of the IGI for other Prentices shown in those records in that general time may indicate close relatives. We Thomas Prentice, a member of the church, who had the following children:

  • Thomas Prentice, chr. 28 Aug 1557, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate. We list him as a probable son, because of his first name, even though the IGI record does not give the father's first name. He would also seem to be the most likely candidate to be Rachel's father since Rachel named her second son, "Thomas". However, Ian Prentice's email of 31 Jan 2001 indicates that Thomas was bur. on 11 Oct 1565 at the age of 8 years.
  • Alice Prentice, chr. 22 Jun 1561, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate.
  • Anthony Prentice, chr. 21 Feb 1562, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate. Ian Prentice says Anthony was bur. 26 Nov 1571
  • Willfred Prentice, chr. 6 Aug 1564, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate. Ian Prentice says he was bur. 14 Apr 1567.
  • Robert Prentice, chr. May 1566, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate. Ian Prentice says Robert was bur. 21 Oct 1571.
  • Barbara Prentice, chr. 7 Oct 1570, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate.
It appears, therefore, that, unless Thomas had other sons unknown to us, Thomas had no surviving sons to extend his Prentice line.

There was also a John Prentice who was a member of Christ Church at that time. He was John Prentice, probably b. c. 1530-38, who had a daughter:

  • Judith Prentice, chr. 1 Jul 1558, Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate. She is probably the Judyth PRENTICE who m. John Harris on 23 Dec 1583 at Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London.

We also have two Prentice women who married there, but the IGI does not indicate the name of their fathers:

  • Annys Prentyce who m. Christopher Jonsen on 14 Jan 1570, Christ Church Newgate
  • Elyzabeth Prentice who m. Lewes JOONES (sic) on 9 Jun 1584 at Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate, London.
Finally, Ian Prentice advises that virtually all of the Prentices in London in that general time frame are a puzzle and that families' London residency might last only one generation, or be intermittent over several generations, because London was, after all, a very unhealthy and dangerous place to live.
