Joseph Prentice was probably b. c. 1800-1810 and perhaps in, or near, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England. He appears in the IGI with his wife and family. Joseph may have d. before 1841 as his wife, Hannah, appears in the 1841 and 1851 Leighton Buzzard census without him.

He m. Hannah, b. c. 1806, Stoke Hammond, Buckingham, England. She appears, without Joseph, in the 1851 census. She later appears in the 1881 census in Dunstable, Bedford, England, living with the family of her daughter, Sarah. Children (per IGI):

1. Sarah Ann Prentice, chr. 24 Oct 1830, All Saints, Leighton Buzzard. . . . . . . [2]
2. George Prentice, chr. 18 Mar 1835, All Saints, Leighton Buzzard. . . . . . . . [3]
3. Joseph Prentice, chr. 25 Aug 1839, All Saints, Leighton Buzzard. At home in 1841. He does not appear at home in the 1851 census and might be by then deceased.

2. Sarah Ann Prentice, chr. 24 Oct 1830, All Saints, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. At home in 1841. She is almost certainly the person in the 1861 Leighton Buzzard as Sarah Ann Ambrose, b. c. 1831, Leighton Buzzard, shown with her husband, Thomas Ambrose, b. c. 1826, Hemel Hempstead. Sarah Ann appears, without her husband, in the 1871 census in Leighton Buzzard and in the 1881 census in Dunstable, Bedford, with her daughters and her mother: Children per 1881 census:

1. Joseph Ambrose, b. c. 1857, Leighton Buzzard. At home in 1871. He does not appear in the 1881 census.
2. Sarah A. Ambrose, b. c. 1862, Leighton Buzzard. At home in 1871.
3. Mary A. Ambrose, b. c. 1867, Leighton Buzzard. At home in 1871.

3. George Prentice, chr. 18 Mar 1835, All Saints, Leighton Buzzard. At home in 1841. He may be the George Prentice who appears in the 1861 and 1871 census in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, as b. c. 1835, Leighton Buzzard and with his wife, Jane (Blindle?), b. c. 1832, Dunstable. He later appears in the 1881 census living at 131 West St., Ironmongers Shop, Dunstable. In the 1891 Census he is still living in Dunstable as a Carpenter and with his wife. George and his wife appears in the 1901 census in Portsmouth, Hampshire census. Children per 1861, 1871 and 1881 census:

1. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1860-1, Dunstable, Bedfordshire. At home in 1881 census. Not at home in 1891 census and may be by then married.

Living with George and his family in the 1881 census is a mother-in-law, Susannah Blindle, b. c. 1805, Dunstable.

A check of the IGI did not show any earlier births or marriages of a Joseph Prentice in an appropriate time frame. Neither does it show any marriages for his children in Leighton Buzzard in an appropriate time frame. From other records Ian Prentice has located a Joseph Prentice who was b. in 1761 and m. Elizabeth Crouch in 1793. That Joseph Prentice d. 1838 or 1842 at Leighton Buzzard. There are two possibilities:

• He might be the father of the Joseph Prentice who m. Hannah, or
• He might be the same Joseph with Hannah being a second wife.
