Elizabeth Prentice of Polk Co., IA

Fall 2002 and Revised 17 Jan 2004

Update of 2 Feb 2003:   Elizabeth Prentice is a daughter of Frederick Prentice of Hancock Co., IL. This article has now been replaced by our Spring 2003 article at Frederick R. Prentice of Hancock Co., IL .

Original Article:

We are helping Becke Dawson in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. Elizabeth Prentice was b. 1863 in Polk County, IA and d. there on 5 Apr 1893. She m. James William Dawson on 16 Oct 1884 in Polk County. He was b. 22 Dec 1864 in Polk County and d. 20 Jan 1941, Rising Sun, Polk County. Children:

  1. Vilas Earl Dawson, b. 20 Feb 1885, Youngstown, IA.
  2. Mary Alma Dawson, b. 5 Nov 1887.
  3. Glen C. Dawson, b. c. 1890-91, Nebraska.

After Elizabeth d. in 1893, James m. 2nd Florence Jane Caldwell and their first child was born Nov 1895 in Adel Twp., Dallas County, IA.

Who are Elizabeth Prentice's Parents?

In reviewing the 1880 census for Grant, Polk Co., IA, we found the following family with a daughter named Elizabeth who may be the Elizabeth Prentice, above. The census information for the family shows it headed only by the mother, Lucy/Lucey Prentice, b. c. 1826, KY and children:

  1. Dewit Prentice, b. c. 1846, IL, farmer.
  2. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1855, IA.
  3. Ellen Prentice, b. c. 1857, IA.
  4. Josafean Prentice, b. c. 1860, IA.
  5. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1864, IA.
  6. William Prentice, b. c. 1866, IA.

We also noticed a Pitt Prentice living in Polk County in 1880, son of Frederick R. Prentiss , about whom we have an article in our Spring 1999 issue.

Pitt Prentice may, or may not, be related to Elizabeth. Pitt's father, Fredereck, was b. c. 1815 in NY and living in IL in the 1850 census. He would have been only about 48 when Elizabeth was born in 1863. Frederick might have moved to IA, but he does not appear in our 1880 IA census extracts.
