Golden Wedding - from the Motherwell Times 1896.
Last Friday night in the Conservative Hall, Motherwell, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Prentice, Dalziel Cemetery Cottage celebrated their Golden Wedding. There was a large gathering of the family and friends, Rev. David Scott, B.D. presided, and in the name of the family, presented the aged couple with a purse of soveriegns. He also handed over to them a beautiful marble timepiece from the choir of Dalziel Parish Church, in which Mr. Prentice has been an officer for over 20 years. Numerous other articles were presented from friends. Mr and Mrs Prentice were married in Wishaw in 1846 by the Rev. Mr Scott of Bonkle, where the young groom was engaged as a grave-digger - a position (combined with that of church officer) which his father and grandfather had held before him. The couple are still in the enjoyment of good health, and are at work every day - Mr Prentice as gravedigger and Mrs Prentice as cleaner of the Parish church. Of their family, three sons and three daughters are still alive, and there are besides 32 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. The gathering was a most enjoyable one. From the Motherwell Times Friday, July 27, 1900
Death of Mr Robert Prentice.
There died on Saturday last at Cemetery Cottage, Mr. Robert Prentice, gravedigger, at the age of 75 years, after an illness extending over only three weeks. Mr. Prentice has been all his life a gravedigger in the parish and not only did his father and grandfather before him occupy similar positions, but his son is presently employed in the cemetery, thus making four generations of gravediggers. Mr Prentice was, for many years, Beadle of the parish church, from which position he retired a year or two ago. Some three years ago, Mr Prentice celebrated his Golden Wedding.Dwelling: Motherwell C...
