Introductory Note: Our Prentice Newsletter is primarily a repository of information gathered by others which facilitates research into the various Prentice family trees. By and large it is reasonably accurate, but its accuracy rests on many factors, including legibility of handwriting, memory and research skills. We make no claim that our articles are without error and have always immediately corrected errors brought to our attention.
We received an email which says that the lineage set out below contains perceived errors but did not identify them so we are unable determine what corrections, if any, are needed. As always, we encourage readers to undertake independent confirmation of our material and to let us know of any errors so we can correct them.

2. John Prentice, b. Lesmahagow and bap. 2 October 1748. . See also Fn. 5. He is said to have studied theology at Glasgow Universith and is said to have died a wealty merchant in New York, but the latter has not yet been substantiated.
John Prentice m. Elizabeth Stuart on 25 Apr 1777, Lesmahagow (per Robert McLeish, email, 11 May 2003). Children of John and Elizabeth (per Robert McLeish, above):
- Daniel Prentice, b. Jul 1777 at Moat, Lesmahagow. He is probably the Daniel Prentice of Carnwath who appears in our Summer 2003 issue.
- Mary Prentice,b. 28Nov 1780, Moat, Lesmahagow. Robert McLeish notes that the Scottish Ancestry Research Society report states "Margaret" born 28 Nov 1780. However, he states he has rechecked his transcription of the OPR and the original Microfilm and it is definately "Mary".
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. 12 Aug 1786, Intockhouse, Lesmahagow.
3. James Prentice, chr. 25 Jun 1750 in Lesmahagow.
He m. Marian Brown or Broun on 18 Jun 1784 in Lesmahagow. She was b. 1763 in Lesmahagow.
There is an unverified assertion that she may be a descendant of John Brown of Priesthill, Newkirk, Ayrshire, Covenanter and Martyr who d. in 1685. For more on John Brown, see http://www.alastairbrown.com/john_brown_of_priesthill.htm . For an extensive listing of John Brown's descendants which does not include Marian Brown, see Ancestry.com .
James Prentice may be the same person as the James Prentice buried in Lesmahagow Churchyard on 11 Mar 1828, aged 77 years.
Presently known children of James and Marian per Ancestry.com :
- Janet Prentice. She m. Robert Scott.
- Margaret Prentice, chr. 30 Dec 1785, Lesmahagow. She m. William King on 15 Nov 1811 at Lesmahagow. For their children, see Ancestry.com.

3a. John Prentice, b. 1793, Lesmahagor and d. 1874.
He m. 1st Margaret Duncan on 6 Dec 1817 at Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was b. 1798 and d. 1823. In 1841 Lesmahagow census with his wife and family. Known children:

- John Prentice, chr. 21 Jun 1823. . . . . . [3d]
John m. 2nd Jane/Jean Torrance (per IGI) on 16 Apr 1826 (aka Jean Torrence in IGI) (1798 to 1873 and in the 1841 census was living in Lesmahagow with her son, James). Additional investigation is needed to determine whether or not this was a 2nd marriage for John Prentice. Apparent children of that (2nd?) marriage:
- John Prentice, b. 1826 and d. 1901. He m. Elizabeth Jack.
- (perhaps) Andrew Prentice, b. c. 1831 (see 1841 census)
- (perhaps) Janet Prentice, b. c. 1831 (see 1841 census)
- (perhaps) Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1836 (see 1841 census)
- (perhaps) Marion Prentice, b. c. 1836 (see 1841 census)
- (perhaps) Charles Prentice, b. c. 1839 (see 1841 census)
3b. James Prentice, chr. 28 Sep 1819 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland, and d. 1866.
There is some ambiguity about his marriage. Ancestry.com says he m. Ann Hiddlestone on 6 Apr 1832 in Kirkcudbright, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Children (per Ancestry.com):
- Mary PRENTICE b: 4 Apr 1835 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, Scotland
- Thomas PRENTICE b: 6 Mar 1837 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1861 census in Kilniver, Argyllshire, apparently unmarried, and living with his mother, Ann.
- John PRENTICE b: 3 Dec 1840. Not in 1861 census.
- Sarah PRENTICE b: 8 Feb 1844 in Tynron, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. She m. David Williamson on 11 Jun 1867, Morton, Dumbrieshire. He was b. 6 Dec 1829 in Morton, Dumfrieshire, son of James Williamson and Nicholas(?) Rogerson. Children:

- Angus Williamson b: 3 Sep 1921 in Birmingham, West Midlands, England
- Eunice Carlyle Williamson b: 25 Apr 1923 in Litchfield, Staffordshire, England
- Hugh Williamson b: 25 Jul 1925 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England
- Thomas Williamson b: 24 Jul 1873
- Hugh McLauchlan Williamson b: 1875
- Mary Ann Williamson b: 18 May 1876 in Cample Bridge, Closeburn, Dumfrieshire, Scotland
- George Williamson b: 1877
- Sarah Annie Williamson b: 28 Dec 1879 in Cample Bridge, Closeburn, Dumfrieshire, Scotland
- Margaret PRENTICE b: 28 Nov 1845
It is unclear whether it is the same James Prentice who m. Jessie Seaton; that James Prentice was a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer in Glasgow.
3c. Thomas Prentice, chr. 17 Jul 1821 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland, and d. 1891.
There is some uncertainty as to his marriage. One source says he m. Janet/Jane/Jean Muir on 1 Jan 1845 in Lesmahagow. She was the dau. of James Muir and Margaret Gardner and was b. 11 Jan 1820 in Parkhead, Lanark, Scotland. Children (per Marge C. Sanchez, email, 11 Oct 2002):
- Margaret Gardiner Prentice, b. 9 Feb 1845, Dalserf, Lanark. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3e]
- Robert Prentice, b. 31 Jan 1848, Hazelbank, Lesmahagow, Lanark.
- Agnes Peter Prentice, b. 14 Jul 1851, Lesmahagow, Lanark.
- John Prentice, b. 23 Aug 1852, Lesmahagow, Lanark.
- James Prentice, b. 4 Jun 1854, Lesmahagow, Lanark. He m. Mary Bruce and emigrated to Queensland, Australia. He d. 23 Apr 1917 (Ref: 17/B025181; Judith Dickson, email, 4 Sep 2006). He is bu. with his wife in Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. Mary was the daughter of Robert Bruce and unknown mother (from death record). She died on 20 Mar 1905 1905/001397. She is buried with her husband at Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. Children:
- Jeannie Prentice, b. 29 Oct 1874, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland (per IGI)
- Thomas Prentice, b. 24 Oct 1872, Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland (per IGI).
- John Prentice, b. c. 1879, died 6 Jun 1914, age 35 (Ref: 1914/B019505). Bur. at Lutwyche Cemetery.
- George Prentice, b. 9 Dec 1858, Lesmahagow, Lanark.
It has been suggested that Thomas m. Mary Scott. That appears to be an error as she does not appear in the 1841 census in Thomas' household.
3d. John Prentice, chr. 21 Jun 1823, Lesmahagow. It is unclear whether John died at 6 weeks of age. If so, then John would not be the John Prentice who m. Elizabeth Wilson on 15 Nov 1845 at Lesmahagow (per IGI). Their children, as shown by the IGI, are:
- George Prentice, b. 29 Apr 1855 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland

- Henry Hamp Prentice, b. 11 Mar 1869 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
- James Prentice, b. 17 Jan 1871 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
- Elizabeth Close Hamp Prentice, b. 29 Sep 1872 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
- Christina Johnston Prentice, b. 27 Sep 1874 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
3e. Margaret Gardiner Prentice, b. 9 Feb 1845, and chr. 20 Apr 1845, Dalserf, Lanark. She m. George Francis Crosbie 31 Dec 1867 in Hazelbank, Lesmahagow, Lanark. He was a gamekeeper and was the son of Robert (Gray) Crosbie and Helen Francis and was b. 11 May 1839. Children:

- Thomas Keith Crosbie, b. c. 1870, Lesmahagow, Lanark.

3f. Duncan Hilston Prentice, b. 13 Oct 1857, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. By email of 25 Jul 2001, Graeme McAvoy advises that Duncan m Annie Cooper on 23 Jun 1885 in Perth, Scotland. In 1917 they lived at 37 Whitehall Place, Aberdeen. They had 2 or more children, including:
- (unknown) Prentice, b. 6 Jun 1894, Perth Scotland and d. in Stonehaven, near Aberdeen, Scotland on 6 Jun 1982. He married Mary Milne on 9 Sep 1921.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1898. WW I military death records shoe him as a Private, Royal Fusiliers, 2nd Bn., who d. at age 21 on 9 Oct 1917, son of Duncan and Annie Prentice, of 37 Whitehall Place, Aberdeen. His memorial is found on Panel 28 to 30 and 162 to 162A and 163A, Tyne Cot Memorial. A Google search discloses the following information:
Location: Belgium: The Tyne Cot Memorial to the missing forms the north-eastern boundary of Tyne Cot Cemetary, which is located 9 kilometres north east of leper town centre, on the Tynecotstraat, a road leading from Zonnebeekeweg (N332). The names of those from the United Kingdom units are inscribed on panels arranged by Regiment under their respective ranks. The names of those from New Zealand units are inscribed on panels within the New Zealand Apse located at the centre of the Memorial.
Historical Information: The Tyne Cot Memorial is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war. The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawel and a shortening of the line defence.
There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by the Commonwealth Forces to divert German attention from the weakened French front futher south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele. The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September. The battles of Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites.

If so, perhaps he added a couple years to his age to reduce the age difference. 1891 census in Whitburn, West Lothian, living with his brothers and with no wife shown.

24. John Prentice, b: 23 May 1858 at Crofthead, West Fauldhouse, in the parish of Whitburn, County of Linlithgowshire, Scotland (per Mark Prentice, email, 25 Nov 2000). At the time of John’s birth, his father, David Prentice, was an iron miner. John emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, probably aboard the ship "Canterbury" which left Glasgow on 12 Sep 1878 and arrived in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand on 10 Dec 1878. He was then 20 years old and listed in the passenger records as a "farm labourer" from "Lanarkshire".
John Prentice married Helen "Ellen?" Howieson in Dunedin, New Zealand, on 28 Dec 1882. She was born in 1860 in the parish of Whitburn and d. 1942 in Stabem Shotts, Scotland.
At the time of his marriage John was a 24 year old gold miner. There had been a gold rush at Gabriel’s Gully, near the small Central Otago town of Lawrence where John and Ellen Prentice were at that time living. However, the gold boom had peaked some years earlier so it is not believed that John met with much success.
By 1886 the couple had moved further up the South Island to the West Coast. John now earned his living as a coal miner and in his time held other positions of responsibility with the Westport Coal Company that operated the mine and may have been mine manager. They lived atop a rocky outcrop 2000 metres above sea level in a shanty town called Denniston that was often shrouded in heavy mists, buffeted by high winds and covered in snow for weeks on end in winter.
John Prentice died, tragically on 23 Jun 1898, aged just 40 years in Nelson. He had been removed there to hospital from Denniston. He is buried in Nelson. Ellen, his widow, returned with her three New Zealand-born young children to Scotland. There, Ellen married a Mr. Hamilton.

At the time of his marriage in 1911, David was a blacksmith, 21 years of age, and lived at Stane, Shotts. In 1912, after the birth of his daughter, Agnes, David and his family returned to the coal mining town of Denniston in New Zealand where he worked as a blacksmith on the world famous Denniston railway incline renowned as a great engineering feat due to the steepness of the gradient of the hillside from which the coal was extracted and the operation of the coal bins sent down the rails to the port of Westport for despatch by ship.
From Denniston, the family moved to New Zealand's North Island and settled in a town north of Wellington called Petone, about 1922. After raising their children David and Jessie Prentice moved further north to Napier. Jessie died there in 1966 after which David moved back to Petone. Footnote 1: A word of caution: Sadie Hutchinson advises that she is "not 100% certain that [thomas had a son named Adam) OPR#3153221 shows a child baptised on the 4/11/1755 to Thomas & Jane but the page is damaged and we could not be certain of the christian name, but if you check the rest of their children we think there is a more than good possibility that this is Adam."
Footnote 2: A word of caution: Sadie Hutchinson advises that in Carnwath Churchyard there is a headstone for a Margaret Prentice, born 31 Jan 1780, daughter of Adam Prentice and Margaret Brocket of Carnwath. She further advises she is making an assumption that this Margaret is the same person as the Margaret who is #3 below and for whom Sadie has no specific birth date, although she was likely born in the time period of about 1780 to 1787.
There are, however, other possible parents for Margaret, #3 above, according to the records of the Glasgow Records Office:
1. She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 27 Jul 1778, daughter of James Prentice and Margaret Meikle. They are known to have had the following children, all christened at Carnwath: a. Margaret Prentice, chr. 27 Jun 1778. b. Archibald Prentice, chr. 28 Apr 1782. c. David Prentice, chr. 27 Jul 1784. d. William Prentice, chr. 27 Jul 1784. e. Mary Prentice, chr. 26 Mar 1786. f. Christian Prentice, chr. 19 Jan 1790. g. Peter Prentice, chr. 19 Jan 1790. 2. She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 27 Jun 1784, daughter of David Prentice and Agnes Somerville. They are known to have had the following children, all christened at Carnwath: a. Thomas Prentice, chr. 13 Oct 1782. b. Margaret Prentice, chr. 27 Jun 1784. c. Janet Prentice, chr. 3 Jul 1786. d. John Prentice, chr. 26 Aug 1788. e. Jean Prentice, chr. 14 Mar 1790. f. John Prentice, chr. 6 Jan 1793. 3. She may be the Margaret Prentice chr. 21 Feb 1790 daughter of Henry Prentice and Jean Nimmo of Carnwath. However, that Margaret would have been only 13-14 when Margaret m. James Mann about 1803-1804.Footnote 3: Jacqueline Gibson's email of 8 Jul 2001 provides the following additional information:
Agnes was born abt 1806 in Appin, she married Thomas PRENTICE in Lesmahagow 31/5/1832 and the banns were also read in her parish of Avondale. She lived in Lanarkshire up to 1881 and eventually died in Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire in 1889.
Her parents on her death certificate were given as Duncan McCOLL, Night watchman (deceased) - Dorothy McCOLL, MS McCOLL (deceased). Jacqueline found their marrige in Lisemore 4 Dec 1803 and the 1861 census for Glasgow.
Duncan McCOLL, Policeman Widower of Dorothy McCOLL died 4 Aug 1862 at 105 High Street Glasgow, age 81. He was the son of Solomon McCOLL, Farmer (deceased) and Catherine McInnes.
Dorothy McCOLL d. 12 Dec 1861, 105 High Street Glasgow. Daughter of Hugh McCOLL, Farmer.
Footnote 5: Rick Prentice's email of 13 May 2000 has provided us with a line of Prentice descent, prepared by Wayne Neilson, purporting to be from Thomas Prentice, #1 above, through his son, John, #2 above, and grandson, Daniel. We have been unable to verify that his John is the same person as #2. Accordingly, we have created a new article for our Summer 2003 issue about Daniel Prentice of Carnwath and Lesmahagow
