    1. William Prentice was b. c. 1847 in Scotland. He appears in the 1880 Allegheny Co., PA census as a Coal Miner with his wife, Anne/Annie, b. c. 1857 in Scotland. We do not yet know when he emigrated to American, but it was at some date before Oct 1874 when his son, James, was b. in OH. We also do not know whether William married Anne/Annie before, of after, they emigrated to America.

    William does not appear in the 1900 and 1910 census. He may, or may not, be the William Prentice shown in the 1920 census in Chartiers, Washington Co., PA as a resident in the Washington County Home. Children per 1880 census and Ancestry.com:

    2. James Prentice, b. 29 Oct 18175, Youngstown, OH, and d. 29 Dec 1957, Charleroi, PA. He appears in the 1900 and 1910 Forward, Allegheny Co., PA census with his wife and family.

    He m. Clara Gilmer c. 1900 She was b. 12 May 1882, Fayette City, Fayette Co., PA, and d. 15 Aug 1971, Charleroi, Washington Co., PA, per the SSDI. She was the dau. of William P. Gilmer (1857-1929) and Hannah Mitchell (1852-1912). They also appear in the 1920, Westmoreland Co., PA census and in the 1930 Charleroi, Washington Co., PA census. Her obituary in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA) of 20 Aug 1971 reads as follows:

      Clara Prentice, 89, of 101 Lookout Ave., Charleroi, died yesterday at 2:35 p.m. at her home. She was born in Fayette City, a daughter of the late William and Hannah Mitchell Gilmer.

      She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Charleroi. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, four sons and two daughters. Surviving are the following daughters, Anna Gray, Georgina Hixson and Gladys Hurley, dall of Charleroi, Marion Dimascio of Van Nuys, Calif., Marie Saunders of North Charleroi; sons, Harry and Eugene of Charleroi, Dan of Okmulgee, Okla., and Dave of Welston, Ohio; a sister, Mary Statners of Haelton, PA; 28 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and 16(?) great-great-grandchildren.

      Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 12 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Harold L. Schrock Funeral Home, Charleroi.

          Mary Olive Prentice, 78, of Somerset, died Monday, June 29, 2009. She was born June 3, 1931.

          Preceded in death by husband, Donald Robert Grice; husband, James Albert Prentice; and grandson, Rex Marinelli. Survived by daughters, Lee Grice (Dana Ventriglia) and Jan Grice (Donald Marinelli); granddaughter, Olivia Teresa Marinelli; and sister, Sara Chew, all of Pittsburgh.

          Mary was a graduate of Greensburg High School and the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City. After the death of her first husband, she completed her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature at the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. Since 1974, Mary lived on her secluded property on Laurel Mountain. She was a lover of nature and drew inspiration from the wildlife and beauty of the mountains.

          Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at McCABE BROS. INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside. There will be no service. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, 208 West Main St., Ligonier, PA 15658, or to the Humane Society of Somerset County, P.O. Box 182, Somerset, PA 15501.

    7. Benjamin Frank Prentice, b. 1910, PA. Home in 1930. Not in SSDI. There is a chance he might be the Franklin Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 9 Oct 1910, SS# in PA, and d. Apr 1964. That person may also be the Frank Prentice mentioned in a brief "In Memoriam" published in the 9 Apr 1968 "The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA) as having "died four yeara ago today, April 9 1964," and mentioning a wife and daughter. That is the same newspaper that published a death article about his brother, #3 Daniel Prentice, below.
    8. Harry L. Prentice, b.17 Mar 1912 and d. Feb 1981 in Charleroi, Washington Co., PA. At home in 1930 census. He may be the Harry Prentice Sr. mentioned in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA of 16 Dec 1969 which said he was again elected Presidento of the 1,000 member union at Corning Glass Works in Charleroi, having held that post from 1953-1955 and 1957-1960. He m. Georgina "Jean" Smith. She was b. 17 Nov 1914 and d. in Charleroi on 1 Mar 2000 in Charleroi per the SSDI. Children per Ancestry.com:

    The following material comes from an article in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA) on 18 Jul 1964:

      Falling Glass Pack Kills Man, Area Native

      Daniel Prentice Jr., 23 [b. 1941], formerly of Charleroi, was killed Thursday in an Okmulgee, Okla, glass plant accident. He was caught beneath a toppling glass pack and died instantly. Frank [Prentice] an older brother, witnessed the accident when the huge box tumbled over. Further information was lacking.

      Prentice was a packer in the American-St. Gobain Glass Company's Okmulgee plant, a forerunner of which was the old Belle Vernon plant of the American Window Glass Co. The Prentice family moved west from Charleroi when the AmericanWindow Glass Co. opened its Okmulgee development and merged with American-St. Gobain.

      [Daniel] Prentice was born in Charleroi Feb 25, 1941.

      Surviving are: his widow, Barbara Ann Thornberg Prentice; one son, Danny Ray, at home; his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs Daniel Prentice Sr. of Okmulgee, a brother, Frank Prentice of Okmulgee, a stepbrother, Charles Taylor of Modesto, Calif.; a half sister, Donna Prentice of Okmulhgee; two step sisters, Linda Gail and Diane Akers of Okmulgee; and his grandmother, Mrs. Clara Prentice of Charleroi.

      Friends will be received at the Harold L. Schrock Funeral Home, Charleroi, Monday.

    4. (probably son) Woodrow W. Prentice, b. 16 Aug 1928, PA and d. Jun 1986, Washington, Washington Co., PA , per SSDI. Not shown in 1930 census.

    2. Charles "Lucky" Prentice. Died before 2009. It is unclear whether he is the Charles Prentice mentioned in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA of 10 Mar 1979, age 20, cited for dissrderly conduct and minor liquor laws by Charleroi police who, at 3:50 a.m., threw a beer bottle at a truck and broke a window.

    5. Woodrow W. Prentice Jr., b. 30 Apr 1954, Mt. Pleasant, Westmoreland Co., PA and d. 12 Feb 2009 in UPMC Mercy, Pittsburgh, PA. His Obituary of 14 Feb 2009, published in the Valley Independent, reads as follows:

      California, PA.

      Mr. Prentice was born Friday, April 30, 1954, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of the late Woodrow W. Prentice and the late Norma J. (Barr) Prentice. He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Lang) Prentice; two daughters, Holly Espy, of Charleroi, and Jamie Prentice, of Brownsville; three sons, Woodrow Prentice III, of Monongahela, Edward Prentice, of Charleroi, and Phillip Scott Prentice, of Coal Center; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles 'Lucky' Prentice.

      Who are James Prentice's Parents?

      The only clues we have so far as to the identity of James Prentice's parents is that both his mother and father, like James, were born in Scotland. We do not have their birth years, but it was probably about 1815 to 1827 since James was b. c. 1847.

      If William d. in Washington Co., PA, then obtaining a copy of his death record may provide additional information. Likewise, copies of his children's birth and marriage records may provide additional information.

      2. William C. Prentice, b. 27 Aug 1933 and d. 3 Jul 1997, Charleroi, Washington, PA
      3. Jean Prentice, 17 Nov 1914 and d. 1 Mar 2000, Charleroi, Washington, PA.
      4. Stephen Prentice of Charleroi, b. c. 1959 and age 27, arrested 23 Nov 1985 for disorderly conduct and public drunkeness.
      5. Kenneth Prentice, b. c. 1961. 1988 lived at 546 1st St., Charleroi and arrested for burglary. He may be the Kenneth Mitchell Prentice, age 19, of 548 1st St., Charleroi, mentioned in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA) of 13 Jun 1979 as admitted to Mon Valley Hospital with a skull fracture as a result of an auto accident in which he was a passanger. He was said to be in fair condition.

      Also, in checking Charleroi newspapers, we found the following Prentice family in an article in The Valley Independent (Monessen, PA) of 6 Jun 2002 which may be related to James Prentice and his descendants:

        1. (Unknown) Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1940-1946, m. Barbara A. Curry. She was b. 26 Jun 1946 in Belle Vernon, PA(?), lived in Charleroi,Washington Co., PA, and d. 4 Jun 2002 in Loudon Hospital, Leesburg, VA. She was the dau. of Velma Curry (d. bef. 2002). Children:

        1. Richard Prentice. 2002 lived in Washington, PA.
        2. Laura Prentice. She m. Tim O;'Neill. 2002 lived in Boston, MA.
        3. Linda Prentice. She m. Jay Sprowls. 2002 lived in Ellsworth, PA(?). They had 1 or more children, including:
